"Ingrained"

by Jeph Johnson

I remember the events:
Soft
   warm
            fingertips
Our eyes
      closed
      undressing
My heart
   beating
            rapidly
      repeating
At a pace
   so unrelenting
Your face
   smiling content
And you snuggling
   close to me
And holding you
   so gently
And you
   falling
            fast asleep
And my lips
      softly
      on your cheek
And your smile
   remaining
In my mind-
   ingrained.
