"Last Time My Shoes Shined"

by Jeph Johnson

The last time my shoes shined
the sun was behind a cloud
Now regards I give hope to outlive
long enough to hang around
After dark remarks I made
about her lingered into day
She indeed perceived unlike I did,
saw things a different way
To her eyes surprised and patronized
by the one who loved her more
Even more than any other man
who had knocked upon her door
I seem real mean, her "I don't care routine"
she dealt because of things I said
Misconstrued as rude, the mention of her mood
and now our love is dead
