"Her Rhyme"

by Jeph Johnson

the world no longer
rhymes anymore
as a child, in the nursery
every clamor through the din
blended the next line
with stanzas from within
colors vanquish grey away
when I go back in time
and perhaps that's why I'm drawn
spellbound, enraptured by her rhyme
I can barely converse
in this netherworld I've united
blank and bleak,
they clank and squeak,
and it's free verse I've recited
