"The Tortured Artist"

by Jeph Johnson

pity the painter whose strokes betray

brilliance battling alcohol

early ideas clear with conscience

soon became a sweeping colorstorm

even Ed Harris can replicate

still society marvels at his genius

no one before him (except by accident)

and no one since (except by imitation)

spilled paint onto a canvas with such brazen bravado

clothes

                                  new

emperor

oops!

   words are

starting

   to

fall

randomly

   from             my

dictionary

eyes

                                hoax

pull

   close

wool and wow

      fell from the same page!

I may

       (It appears)

be producing

a masterpiece!

but I am not sure if I am ready...

I am in not enough pain;

I still need a mistress

resembling Jennifer Connelly,

a house in the country

and Life Magazine's endorsement:

The Greatest Living Poet in the United States

then and only then I can hope to approach

the torture level that turns turmoil to chaos

and it will be called "art"
