"I Recall"

by Jeph Johnson

I recall
looking to the sky
and imagining God
smiling down on my life
and I'd smile back
and thank this God
for this fleeting moment
when my life
actually seemed blessed
and how happy I was
to have a woman
like her
walking beside me
and smiling
even grander than I,
batting her green eyes,
exposing a softness
that I could
really experience
with her
by holding her
tenderly in my arms
all night,
and oh how the night
seemed guided by
God's miraculous providence
like apple pie
and sunny days
and clear skies
and the waltz we would
just fall into
step by step
and she'd squeeze my hand
and I'd lead her
around the light pole
into my room
or across the dance floor
where people would
look at me like
"hey, this guy knows how to dance"
and
"she sure is pretty"
and
"he sure is lucky"
and
"God sure is good."

I just recall this.

Sounds like a good recollection. Nice feelings you shared. Noticed how you mentioned "Hey, this guy can dance" first... :o)

This is so lovely. My favorite piece of your work this far. I felt like I was there, walking right next her, and you. It was very well-written. Just beautiful.
