"Homerun"

by Jeph Johnson

Tall, rich and pine green
the wet grass from the football field
(our makeshift diamond)
was not conducive to grounders.
Diana had P.E. with me
and she held her bat appropriately
swinging from the hips
like a girl
unimpressed
by bully Billings or Kevin
who at six-foot-five
was tall and rich
and the top player.
was it even fair
to send the pitch into orbit?
sailing over Billings head
it hit the track
and rolled down the hill
by the telephone booth.
I know because
after rounding the bases
they made me chase after it.
