AN ODE TO THE COLLECTIVE FEMALE CONSCIENCE *

Folder:
JOURNAL # 41

to plumb the depths of a woman's experience
a man must do more than merely read
feminist poetry
one must look behind the thinly hung veil
morality is often labored at a woman
like a stick to her deep sense of self
double standard is an old rusty dirty word
us modern women refuse to choke up
out of our throats
and we prefer to unhinge the hidden screws
that hold up that glass ceiling
rather than foolishly attempting to crash through it
like we are wonder woman
only to crudely cut up our lovely faces and still
be held back as we bleed
we have been well tutored by the failures of
our feminist mothers and suffragist great grandmothers
we are gentler men
less inclined to violence
and deeply in tune to what is the fairest path for all
we are pain receiving creators
God's finest emissaries into this brutal world
leading it through trial and error with compassion
grace, guts and grit
a mother for the love her child never gives up
and a woman for the love of her future
and all her sister women's futures never quits
come ye aging feminists, stand behind me
as you stand proudly after your own suffragist
mothers and grandmothers
lead with not only your hard won experience
but with your wide open hearts
to show the girls of today the scars of success
you proudly earned in the name of each
their yet born lives..............

Author's Notes/Comments:

written for women's oppression fighting poet Adrienne Rich who recently died at the age of 82 on March 27nth of this year. I read a marvelous write up on her life in the New York Times and this poem just rushed out of me to my page. God rest your tireless fighter's soul Adrienne.
