You Came Gently

You Came Gently

No macho tactics did you wield,

No lies and no deceit.

You came and softly whispered.

You made my life complete.

My good was all you wanted.

Wished nothing for yourself.

You've always played that shabby hand

That fate has somehow dealt.

The problem is that I fell hard

For you and your concern.

You gave me love that frightens me

As yet it swells and burns.

I never knew that I could feel

So thoroughly at ease.

You let me be that woman, ME,

And never seem displeased.

I knew the ways of bullies.

I knew the style of cads.

But you came to me so gently,

That you turned my doubts to rags.
