Metamorphosis

Long ago and far away

I vowed to God above,

To cherish you through good and bad,

To cover you with love.

To be your mate throughout my days,

And there I took your name,

A mere extension of yourself,

I'd never bring you shame.

Long ago and far away

I lived in hope of you.

Planning lives for both of us

With dreams that all fell through.

I thought I'd change the way you were

With love as pure as rain.

I thought I'd win your heart through prayer

But all I got was pain.

Long ago and yet so near

It happens just today.

I listen as you pledge support,

"Depend on me,"  you say.

And then you climb back in your truck

And drive to her, of course.

As I stand here a smiling shell,

Oh God! I hate divorce!

Very nicely done about a very painful subject.
