Freedom Jubilation

It came at last

After keeping hope a glow

Three centuries of white domination

Freedom jubilation

A historic victory for South Africa

Like an army let loose

They flocked to the polls

defied bomb blasts and portraits intermingling

The sick roused-hopped to hospital polls

Enthusiastically determined

to bring a halt to apartheid

Crippled by the scourge of war

Disease and illiteracy

Incredibly they have broken that cocoon

Flags heralding the birth of democracy

And a new anthem lingering in the chilly air

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote the poem in the 1990's when South Africa achieved self rule.

The flag of democratic freedom flew up for South Africa in 1994, and the heroes of freedom struggle in the person of Nelson Mandela, were rewarded. The history of oppression, subjugation and dehumanization of the African people ends with the spirit of forgiveness; and the enactment of a utilitarian democracy in South Africa. But the challenges of freedom, my brother, behold our Kenyan Nation!
