Back to the Heart of the Matter

"TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE"

Great words from a great poet.  I wondered what they meant so I asked around. I got as

many interpretations as people asked.  Most, however, thought it was a testimony to be

selfish and self-centered.  The logic being to look out for number one.

I did some research and found out the true meaning is to be honest with oneself about

oneself.  This is easier said than done.  Most of us have the self that we want to be and the

self that we really are.  Both realities are clouded by the self that we portray for the benefit

of those watching.

Trying to bring harmony between the three selves usually creates chaos and confusion for

the soul.  Emotions such as guilt, insecurity, fear and false pride for example, reek havoc on

the self esteem.  Hiding behind mask, using drugs, being promiscuous are some of the

things necessary to have in order to deal with the added burden that comes with the

territory of not being at inner peace,  not being oneself so to speak.

Inner peace can only be obtained when the true self, the self that one wants to be and the

public display of self are but one.

When I took the journey into self, I was shocked at what I saw.  My true self and the self

that I thought I was had very little in common.  All intentions, motivations and perceived

outcomes/goals had to be examined.  It was both liberationg and very painful to do but, I am

glad I took the journey.  It was only then that I realized my desperate need for a Higher

Power.

I encourage all to take the journey.  You may be surprised at who you find at the other end.

Either way...."to thine own self be true".
