Oh Socrates!

Unrhymed Poetenry

Oh Socrates! The great man,

You tried to bring change,

You tried to make others see,

You tried to enlighten.

Barefooted like Jesus Christ you went,

To face the mocking trial,

And you uttered, "I to die, and you to live.

Which of these two is better only God knows."

Alas! The oppressors did not realise,

Such a celestial intellect you had!

So-Crates

is how my daughter pronounced his name. Two of his students overthrew the democratic government twice, he had views in opposition to accepted beliefs - a mark of a pioneer but also he challenged the belief in the Gods. I have a small volume of his writings. I should read it. - slc
