My Grandmother's Legacy

My Grandmother stocked an empty cupboard

But kept her mind filled with Jesus

         Sacred Heart, save me now

Dip me deep in that blood

         Dripping like a sacramental wax

         "And deliver me from evil"

My Grandmother always kept the shades drawn

For she could not face the sun

         Holy Ghost, heal me now

Pull my spirit through the fire

         Flaming from the pit

"And protect us from all anxiety"

My Grandmother dusted the corners daily

Yet those spaces never came clean

         Immaculate Soul, teach me how

         To suffer in grace

         Not through this mess

"And defend me from the malicious enemy"

Grandmother of otherness

Feed me

This manna from heaven

This mold from the past.

Those children with the pretty flesh

The world belongs to them now

It is not among

My Grandmother's legacy to me.
