Your love was a lie
It was green candy
that I kept in my mouth for awhile
until the flavor dissolved
Now I have dirty fingernails
because I work so hard to
keep my heart open enough to pump
I get by.
The world is on fire anyway
or shaking itself to pieces
or digging up old hatred
Love was never enough to keep
any of us from breaking.
