And I Brace Myself

You want me to
write you a lighthearted love poem

I can't.

I am in blind torture
my veins are clumpy with
a certain type of sadness
Clots of
doubt and I am terrified they
will break away
reach home

Do you see what I did there?

I used medical analogy to try and metaphorically
explain how serious my condition is
(Read about strokes) You'll get it then for sure

Or you won't.

The point is:

I can't write crappy joyful love poems
It doesn't matter how much I love you
or how perfect your fingertips feel
or how our lips melt into one another like
ice and fire

Because love makes me happy baby
and we all know happiness can be a
fragile thing
it can be a dangling string

It can burn.

be cut.

chewed off

left out in the weather too long
frayed away
swallowed by a sweet talker
but I am too far down inside you to be
pulled out unharmed

and yes

sometimes I smile about that
other times I see the future and I brace myself

That string

of happiness
is going to wrap around me so tightly

that one day it will snap me in half

like a small branch
under an army of feet
while no one was looking
