Dressed in Black

"Why do you always dress in black?" they will say.
Probing. Pondering. Wondering.
And I will always answer in the same way.

My shoes are shined black,
for all the children who never knew warmth,
in the dark hours of winter.

My pants like the night,
for all those cast aside without thought,
caught in a neglected plight.

My back, draped in layers of shadow.
A shirt, a vest, a coat, a tie,
for the blind that never knew light.

I wear black for the boys that have died,
fighting the "good fight".
And those they killed, fighting the same fight.

I wear black so that we may not forget.
I wear black so that wealth and plenty may not blind us.
I wear black so that we will not forget.
