THE CAGE.

Life rained its blows hard upon me,

Punch-drunk I did blindly grope.

With unseeing eyes I stumbled

Into a cage that has no hope.

Huddled there,broken and bleeding,

Battered bird on a hard-won shore,

I mistook its strong bars encircling

For arms that were safe,secure.

But as from my wounds I recovered,

With newly healed eyes I saw

That the place I thought was a haven

Was a cage with a bolted door.

Outside in the misty morning

A bird in a sky of blue

Sings sweetly its song to its lover,

Its joy in the morning new.

While I, in my gilded prison,

From these bars ever yearn to elope;

Remember the fresh taste of morning

From a cage that has no hope.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This poem was written quite some years ago when I was very unhappy....A situation that has since been remedied.

This poem has sincerely inspired me. It inspired me to the point of writing a poem myself. My cage is a bit different from yours and the poem takes on a twist. I'm not going to tell you what it is, though, because I'm hoping you'll read it to find out. I'm going to call my poem, "Puncture-Wound Penetration." I'll put you in my comment section since you motivated me to write it. Thank you for inspiration and great read.

“From a cage that has no hope.” How beautifully poignant ...such a gift with words…wish that I had your skill.

Again, these words are very real.

I have now been seperated for five years. I have a new life.

For me poetry has been the greatest of all healers & so too the talented fellow poets who have shown me that we are not truly ever alone.

I'm glad you're no longer caged. A good poem, great way of describing how our self-protection ultimately cages us if we aren't careful.

"From a cage that has no hope" This ending is great, I often feel this way and I know it's not a good feeling. If this is written from personal feelings then my advice to you is NEVER give up.I have learnt that things do change and they do get better. There always is hope you just have to look for it.Great piece you have written anyhow.I enjoyed it and can relate.Hang in there.Sorry for rambling here :) ~ Best wishes Sarah-Jean
