The Last Dance

Your heart kept beat with mine when last we danced,

as minds and souls were joined in passion’s glow,

when lips touched lips, and lovers swayed, entranced,

entwined as one to music, soft and slow.

I whispered thoughts of love for you to hear,

and murmured soft sweet verses from our song,

then breathed contentment’s sigh close to your ear,

cooed words, that kept you close, where you belong.

We swayed in prelude, toward one eve of bliss,

one dance to stir emotions, stoke a flame,

one deep embrace, one lingered lovers kiss,

one night in rapture’s clutch; you called my name.

‘Twas more than just a dance as hearts took flight,

‘twas foreplay to that eve of love’s delight.

In their flow and rhyme, the lines are very delicately deployed, making this an excellent love poem.  The sudden swerve, at the beginning of the last two lines, into the eighteenth or nineteenth century, through the use of the word "Twas" is a bit jarring to the reader, and somewhat diminishes the power of the previous twelve lines.  But overall, this is a mighty fine poem and, for twelve of its lines, a great pleasure to read.
