The Longest Mile

Sailing away into the Midnight Sea

All my hopes and dreams may never be

Setting my course by a map of fabled lands

The treasure there I'll hold in my hands

Lapping waves that pound against my hull

The mystery beckons, I answer the call

Like a starry night; a canvas across the heavens

The darkness can hide a thousand suns

Years ago in the days of my youth

Carefree songs we'd only sing

Unlike the time that always slipped away

You and I would always stay

Two closest friends, or two lovers of the heart

I was so sure we'd never part

Now years gone by, like my oceans and my sky

Sometimes I look back, sometimes I cry

Saying good-bye is the longest mile we'll ever trace

Leaving a friend is the hardest trial we'll ever face

New landscapes I've seen, my life changed like the seasons

Different places, different reasons

Sometimes leading me on, sometimes forging my own path

The times I've cried and the times I've laughed

But there's always someone there who becomes such a part of me

A friend so dear, a true friend indeed

I remember their names, in my mind their faces remain

It's never the same, though it'll never change

Saying good-bye is the longest mile we'll ever trace

Leaving a friend is the hardest trial we'll ever face

But memories are there to bring a smile to your tear streaked face

Author's Notes/Comments:

Having spent time in the military I was always making friends and leaving friends.

I've sailed the sea of lost friendships along the way myself. It never gets easier to say, "Good-bye." Yet, it becomes routine not to promise to keep in touch when you know deep down inside they won't write back or pick up the phone. You realize that although you've leaving the old behind you're being given the new. Instead of sulking, you live your new life with new friends and move on without forgetting the lessons taught to you along the way. IN this respect, we never lose friends, but gain wisdom in the legacy.

Sadness, camraderie, longing, and regret all masterfully intertwined. And a boat. Well done. stu
