That Rascal

Off in the distance

'ol' Rascal' picks up his ears.

Yes indeed, it's that time again.

His doggie mind whirling.

He scrambles for the high grass

and lies in wait across the ditch.

The blue car, in it's usual hurry,

crests the top of the hill.

Rascal, trembling with excitement,

watches from the weeds,

preparing to spring into action.

Run Rascal, RUN!!

The driver sees a multicolored blur

exploding from the edge of the road.

"Oh!  It's that darn car chasin' dog!"

Pedal to the metal, a race to win.

Every morning, car vs. dog.

Every morning, dog eats dust.

Ahhh, but the afternoons...

a driver unconcern with time.

Comes passively up the road.

A black and white, car chasin' dog

lies waiting in the shade of the oak.

But it's different now.

Barely lifting his head from the driveway,

dog and driver acknowledges the other.

In the heat of the afternoon,

neither cares for the chase.

Winning or losing matters not.

That is, until tomorrow morning....

Author's Notes/Comments:

Every morning, he waits for me......that dog with the grin.

This reminds me of something TRUE -- it really happened! There was a dog on the road going to my sister-in-law's house that would chase cars, and HE WAS FAST!! To keep from catching them, he would turn aroung 3 times EVERY TIME! Three times! I swear it--like he was chasing his tail. Then he would take off in a sprint and ALMOST CATCH THE CAR. Every time we went by him my boys would sit up tall and count them off....one, two, three, HERE HE COMES!!! This is a good poem. The first time I've thought about that fool dog in probably 15 years.
