Shades of Innocence

Shades of innocence
Lost in my youth
Memories that haunt me
The sad bitter truth

A wrinkled hand
That strokes my skin
A wretched nightmare
That doesn’t end

Aged fingers
Find their way
To secret places
I dare not say

This is my sadness
I grieve alone
No amount of forgiveness
Can atone

Where are you now
I cannot sleep
For fear of loved ones
I start to weep

How sad and true
That this event
Has scarred my life
My childhood spent

Shades of innocence
Have been taken
A nightmare from which
I won’t awaken.
