Little Brother

When you were born

I thought of the one more mouth to feed

I thought about how we struggled

And it was cold

I thought about how Dad loved whiskey

more than he could ever love another baby

I was eleven

When you were born

Mama worked too much

Dad drank

And you giggled

You smiled

You held my finger tight

I thought about how unfair it was

I couldn't protect you from everything

Increadibly relatable - and

Increadibly relatable - and really just... emotionally raw to me.

"And you giggled

You smiled

You held my finger tight"

It's such a poignent moment, that feeling of a tiny hand clinging to a distant apendage that just somehow... compresses doubt and fear until there's room for strength, hope, and love.

Thank you for writing this. It was a moment I needed to remember.
