Extraterrestrial Matter

Short Stories

“Look Daniel, it’s a piece of extraterrestrial matter,” says Captain Derrick Courtland.

“What do you think it could be,” asks Daniel Reese. All the while Daniel ponders on what could be out there in space.

“It could be a comet but we cannot be sure unless we go check it out,” answers Derrick.

“How do we do that,” questions Haylee Derrington, the newest member of the crew team.

“Well we do a search by going into outer space in our spaceship,” answers Daniel Reese.

“You know the big blue thing that flies,” adds in Derrick acting like Haylee is stupid because she is new to the team and a girl.

“Captain I am not dumb like you think I am,” Haylee smirks, “I know what a spaceship is.”

“Okay I am glad that you do,” exclaims Captain Derrick Courtland, “Daniel go grab your crew team and get ready to explore outer space.”

Daniel goes to the back room where his crew team is eating lunch. His most important member is Joseph Emerson who is the oldest member and the only male member left. He hesitantly tells Haylee Derrington and Aime Knight about the search because he does not like the girls.

“Joseph I put you in charge of our gas and our oxygen,” Daniel says trying to show the girls that they are not that important, “I trust that you will get the job done.”

“What about us,” Haylee asks in wonder.

“Fine, Haylee you get our head gear and Aime get us some food and water,” commands Daniel, “I am going to go get us some walkie talkies.”

Daniel runs back inside the building and tells Captain Courtland that they are ready to go and that he needs four walkie talkies. After he receives the walkie talkies Daniel heads back to the space ship to get ready to go.

“Does everyone have all of their gear on,” Daniel asks.

“I do,” answers Haylee and Aime at the same time.

“I also do,” replies Joseph Emerson.

“Joseph did you get our oxygen ready and enough gas put in the tank,” asks Daniel.

“Yes I did sir,” replies Joseph anxiously waiting to start the search.

“Okay then let us take off, Joseph would you count us down,” asks Daniel Reese.

“Sure I will,” Joseph exclaims, “ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two and one.”

The space ship shoots off into space. The space ship starts going slower as time starts to warp and it seems like it takes hours just to get a mile.

“Daniel can you hear me,” Derrick asks through the walkie talkie, “I repeat Daniel can you hear me?”

“Yes Captain we can hear you loud and clear,” answers Daniel Reese

“Okay then start looking out for the extraterrestrial matter that you had found earlier,” commanded Derrick

The four crew team members start looking around for anything that looks out of the ordinary.

“Oh look Daniel, is that the matter you saw earlier,” asks Haylee Derrington.

“No, Haylee,” Daniel says, “it was not that color. It was a blue color.”

Daniel, Joseph, Haylee and Aime keep searching, hoping this search does not go to waste. They have been out in space for two hours now.

“Daniel, look this piece of matter is blue,” Aime shouts out excitedly.

“Yes it is,” Daniel replies with pride, “good job on finding it.”

“No problem,” Aime answers egotistically.

“Derrick get a close up,” Daniel begs Captain Derrick, “we think we may have found the piece of matter that I saw earlier this evening.”

“Oh yes,” Derrick agrees as he takes a look through his newest creation; the telescope 5000, “Just give me a moment to look.”

Silence falls over the walkie talkies as crew team patiently wait for Captain Derricks verdict on their findings.

“Sorry Daniel,” Derrick finally says, “the piece of matter you guys just found is not the one you saw earlier. I think the piece you saw earlier is more up north.”

“Okay thank you,” Daniel replies, “We will keep searching.”

The four crew members make sure they are in the right direction and start heading north. This time they make sure to keep their eyes peeled so they do not miss any piece of matter that is out of the ordinary.

“There is a piece of matter,” Haylee shouts, “Is that it?”

“No,” Joseph replies, “that is red. What we are looking for is blue.”

“Daniel, what is the foundation of this piece of matter,” Aime asks curiously.

“Oh,” Daniel replies dumbfounded, “ I cannot believe that I forgot to tell you other characteristics about it. It is really textured and sharp.”

“What shape is it,” Haylee asks.

“At the time I thought it was planet shape,” Daniel answers.

“Daniel,” Joseph points out, “ Is this it? We are more north, the piece of matter is blue and textured and even sharp and planet shaped.”

“Yeah I think it is,” Daniel replies, “Let us call in Captain Derrick.”

“Captain Derrick we think…….” Daniel starts to say.

“You think you found the piece of matter,” Derrick says like he is asking a question.

“Yes as a matter of fact we think we finally found it,” Daniel answers.

“Okay let me get a close up,” Derrick commands.

Once again silence falls over the walkie talkies. Derrick hopes that this time they finally found the piece of matter because he wants the work day to be over. Daniel and his crew members are excited and hope that they discover something new.

“Daniel,” Captain Derrick says, “Congratulations you have found the correct piece of matter. Get as close as you can and find out as much as you can about it.”

“Yes sir,” Daniel replies in excitement, “ We will and we will make you proud.”

Joseph takes over the wheel of the space ship and gets as close as he can to the piece of matter. He inches closer and closer slowly as in not to disturb the piece of matter and make it move.

“Be careful Joseph,” Haylee exclaims.

“Haylee, it is alright I am watching what I am doing,” Joseph calmly says.

“Okay,” Daniel shouts, “ Would you two stop cat fighting. I think you are close enough Joseph. Let us see what we can find.”

Joseph stops the ship and the four of the crew members start observing the extraterrestrial piece of matter.

“What do you guys know about the matter that we do not already know,” Daniel questions the three other members.

“I can see rings around it,” Haylee bursts out.

“Good,” Daniel announces, “Anything else?”

“I notice some red mixed in with the blue,” Joseph adds in, “ that could mean that it has a very hot surface.”

“Hot surface, that sounds good,” answers Daniel, “How about it is revolving around something. But what could it be revolving around?”

“It could be revolving around a planet,” questions Haylee.

“It could, or it could be revolving around the sun,” Joseph butts in.

“Daniel,” Aime asks in wonder, “ can I ask you a question?”

“Of course you can,” Daniel answers.

“Did you ever think it could be a planet,” Aime asks.

“No,” Daniel ponders, “I honestly did not think about that. But now that you mention it, it could be a planet.”

“Yeah,” Joseph adds, “ it has all the characteristics of a planet.”

“Who thinks this piece of matter is a planet,” Daniel questions his crew members.

“I do,” Aime shouts out.

“I also do,” says Haylee, “Now it is up to the two of you.”

“Joseph do you think it is a planet,” asks Daniel.

“Yeah I do, Joseph answers, “do you?”

“Now that we have discussed it I do,” Daniel answers.

“What will we name it,” asks Aime.

“I am not sure,” answers Daniel, “Lets tell Captain Derrick and he can decide the name.”

Captain can you read us,” Daniel said through the walkie talkie.

“Yes I can Daniel,” Derrick replies, “what did you find?”

“We found a planet,” Aime shouted out.

“Oh you did,” Derrick answers in shock.

“Yeah it is true,” Daniel replies, “ Not only did we discover a new planet, we thought we would let you name it.”

“Wow should I feel touched,” Captain Derrick says with a big smile on his face.

“So what are you going to name it,” Haylee asks impatiently.

“I am not sure,” Captain Derrick replies, “give me some time to think about that.”
