NEW YEAR DRIZZLE

Casings from cheap fireworks

litter the courtyard;

a light rain is falling

as the dog leads me

thru damp grass

The dog occasionally stops

to sniff out the remains

of last night’s festivities

It’s raining on New Year’s Day

and the grey clouds float above

an empty bottle

of cheap sparkling wine sits

a few feet away from a dumpster

my pooper scooper is ready

but the dog is distracted

by the debris of last night’s gala

I see the wet spots on my hoodie

as the drizzle continues to fall

so all that celebration

and now it’s a rainy day

and a new year to boot

It’s warm enough to wear shorts

on January 1.

The dog finds a hydrant

and becomes a cliché

I weigh the meaning

of it all

another day;

another year;

they want me

to make resolutions

and promise change

and a new beginning

The dog finally takes a shit

and I wait to pick up his mess

I also make a mental note

to pick up the bottle

of cheap sparkling wine

and toss it in the recycle bin

I head back to my room

with leftover Orange chicken

in the fridge

and Bowl games on the tube

so just exactly what has changed?
