SUBTLE GIFT OF THE OBLIQUE

I have often

aspired

to attain

the subtle gift of the oblique

to turn out wit and phrase

like Mencken or Twain

but the dark brooding eyes

conceal

the relative compassion

and humor

all too oft overlooked

just leading to contempt

and bruised feelings

but I knew

right from the top

what a royal pain

in the ass

it all would be

For some reason, and I cannot

For some reason, and I cannot quite explain it, this poem put me in mind of the writings of Ambrose Bierce.  I think it was the mention of Twain and then the poignant use of those words "contempt" and "bruised feelings."  I also think this poem will comtinue to resonate in my mind.

I read Devil's Dictionary

I read Devil's Dictionary years and years ago.  There is easily some influence from Bierce in my writing.
