The Grown Man's Guide

Fellas, ever took time and thought real solid

of what you would do when time to approach college

biologically, you become a man at age 18

and hopefully your young life carries with nothing

to intervene

Bill Cosby had that speech with Theo about regular people

and that rich folks and middle class ain't neccessarily equal

you probably live in your mama's basement, but I won't judge you there

unless you don't make efforts on getting out of there

but if you do, you can start with a part time hustle

but the full time would help and you won't have to struggle

kats may laugh at Calvin working at WacArnold's

but hard earned work pays off at full throttle

and try to save as much as you can spend

and be careful.....cuz extra dough can generate extra friends

And that's another thing, keep around those you trust

not talking about repeat felons and the guns they bust

as long as you can relate to those who think and act like you

and you can take those extra steps in the world as they challenge you

By the time you reach 23, you should be well educated

either with or without a degree, but still obligated

to earn as much as your parents when they struggled to raise you

watch the game, play it, master it, don't let it play you

more than likely you'll be involved with your longtime love

and talks about committment and marriage looms above

not saying you should walk down the aisle at the drop of a dime

but eventually it's important to your woman and her biological time

and if you have kids together, then it's already a lifetime bond

a ready-made family as you strengthen and bond

but then again at that age, you still have a lot to learn

maybe demons to face and bridges to burn

but if you're single, keep your game up to par

don't be livin in moms for free and you got yourself a car

that shit probably runs for 30K or more

when a third of that amount should be invested in a store

Stand up for something or you'll get left behind

and cussin at the world because you got blinded

cuz the world will laugh back when you don't take a chance

of what's out there for you to advance

and if you got credit, keep it stabilized and decent

pay your shit on time, and hopefully increase it

and of course, have a bank account, you never know when it's needed

and women will disregard you if you're a cheap bitch

Not saying she should run your pockets dry and tarnish your pride

But if she's real, then she learned that from the grown woman's guide

Now that you done did your late night partying and gettin dirty

the 20s are out the door. Damn! Now you enter 30

Clubbing doesn't have an age limit, but you would look at it different

and the same kids you once teased, are now wild and beligerent

you're now observing what should be in your family's future

possible promotions, 401k's,and an extra boost up

for planning to get that house upon the hills

and establishing a budget(fuck it), that should never change

that once your plan is developed, then all should be arranged

to live, to build, to struggle and pray

to be the best grown man you are today

that's the normality of men who structure themselves

take it from the man who wrote this, it's all about self.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This is kinda simplistic in writing form. Of course, not every man was taught or conditioned to become a product of success, or to embellish good habits, but by nature, that normally plays a role in our lives somehow.

Preach, please. I love this, hopefully the young brothers will listen to your wisdom and let it motivate a change.

This was a very well written poem. I'm so glad you wrote it, and I hope you post it on Myspace so others can read it. You are truly a blessed writer.
