THIS PLACE IS NEITHER YOURS NOR MINE

This place is neither mine nor yours,

For a night or two span all our years.

Ah, the sadness that feeds on my soul!

Do I really look so unloved and lonely?

Let the folks confuse you with all that they like,

But beware! The disaster 'see' will, one day, be.

O, did you not try, when the house came down crumbling,

To save the bird's nest that crashed completely?

The dry twigs of autumn relate a tale,

Like my worn-out form, tattered and frail.

O please, don't go out for a hunt on your own,

Pitfalls lurk in shadows, unseen and unknown.

One day in a stream, I saw a fish, observing,

The bait I had thrown -- the hook in the worm.

So note down this, the wisdom of my years:

Nothing in this world can be mine or yours.

Like travellers we all come: they, me and you,

In this inn called Earth, for a night or two.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Inspired by a famous ghazal which, if I remember correctly, is by late Seemab Akbar Abadi, a famous Urdu poet of the early 1900s.
