Holding Ground

as I gaze ahead at the open road,

the twists, the bends, the curves...

I think to myself

I love her.

With an undying luminscence

I love her.

The scenery rushes past

The lines on the road blur...

I say out loud

"What happened with us?

I'd give it all if I could only know...

what happened to us?"

heat rises from the hood

the tires barely grip the road

I slam the wheel and yell,

"Why did you end it?

He'll never love you as much as I do!

Why did you end US?"

the pedal pressed to the floor

the end of the road barreling toward me

I close my eyes

I see her face. I hear her laugh. I smell her hair. I feel her in my arms. I taste the remains of a kiss not there...

I grip the wheel

my knuckles white... the end in front of me

the headline reads, "Local man found dead in high speed car wreck"

I can't believe what I'm reading

That someone like I last night

could not stop that car

Because the memory of her was not enough

not for him

but for I

it's all that remains

and that

is enough to keep me in this world
