the colours I lost

here it is, the

elixir that they promised, I have worked hard

for it, we all

have, following the instructions

that appear on the whiteboard and

disappear soon afterwards, that’s why

I dislike whiteboards, everything’s

so easily obliterated,

the beginning is long gone, and I can’t remember

how we started

or what the reason was,

I just know that for a few

million half lives I have been

measuring, titrating, heating,

filtering, discarding leftovers,

watching them go down the sink

sucked into shadows or

whatever lies below, I’m no longer sure,

no one’s sure, everything is

changeable, I started with a piece of copper

shining like golden earth, where has it gone

now, dissolved and transmuted,

most reactions are reversible but I can’t

get the same atoms back, as the colours fluctate

it seems they have

no end, but they do, it’s what

I’m left with,

a pretty blue fluid,

the shade

the ocean used to be

though the sea is grey these days

and tastes bitter

like sitting here, staring at

this worthless blue liquid

which is a solution in one sense

only
