A Moment In Time

I strive to grasp the words I feel,

  the words I know will soothe and heal;

The hurts encountered living life,

  from lack of peace and excessive strife.

The need to voice these words of prose,

  to counter strife for my souls repose;

Through need of poetry to compose,

  and find abundant, joyous, peace.

By drawing on the words within,

  and pull them out from depths unknown;

A well of sadness caused by sin,

  for a conflicted life I must atone.

And if by chance my Muse reveals,

  the words my heartsick soul conceals;

Then once again a poem is born,

  for a moment in time , my soul is healed.

Some of the finest poems in the literature are about poetry and inspiration (for example, the work of America's greatest poet, Wallace Stevens). This poem is part of that great tradition. Another great poet, Thomas Jones Jr., wrote, in his poem "A Voice From The Far Away" these words: "You will speak the meaning within a dream / And the pain in the after glow." You have described that very process in this poem . . . the great pleasure and the sometimes great pain that come together in the inspiration of a great poem. I applaud your accomplishment!
