My Grandfather Tequila Shot

I don’t know how but his shot of tequila always seemed to refill by itself. When I was younger, before he pasted away, my grandfather used to sit in this big brown leather chair, he sat there for hours reading big books. Beside the chair was a small wooden table with and old lamp sitting on top, the table was very old and very fragile, I know this because every time someone touched this table it squeaked. On top of the table there were ALWAYS two things, a small glass jar full with salted peanuts and a glass shot full with yellow colored tequila. So he sat there reading, sipping on the shot, but what was more intriguing is that the shot was never empty, now, I don’t know if it was because the nurse that looked after my grandpa refilled the shot or because he did not drink it at all and he just pretended to be drinking his tequila. It was on Sundays when my family went over to visit him, and all those Sundays I never saw how he managed to keep his shot full, because I saw him drink from it with my own eyes, but once I got distracted with anything else, when I saw the shot, it was full again. I don’t know, maybe he had a bottle hidden near and he refilled it, maybe it was a magic shot or at least that’s what I though when I was younger, at the time I was around 7 years old so my imagination was pretty wild. Some time later he died, I remember I was in school and they called me to the deans office and it was not a uncommon thing for me to visit Mr. Farrington (the dean) for disciplinary reasons, however when I got there I remember I noticed something different, it was the first time he looked at me with sadness because he always seemed to be angry at me, so he passed me this office type phone with a lot of buttons, “hello?” I said, it was my mom on the other end, she explained that I had lost my grandfather and that my dad was on his way to pick me and my sister up. We got dressed for the funeral, I think it was the first time I put a suit on, and headed to his home to gather with the rest of my family, as all the grown ups were discussing adult stuff I headed to where he had his chair, and it was the first time in years he was not seating there, no glass shot on the table and no peanuts, it was in that exact moment I realized he was gone.
