Envisage

Envisage a place
Swallowed in dark,
Flooded with sunlight
A place with no violence,
No razors, no knives--
I've been there.

Envisage a place
Everything's scheduled
In orderly shifts
Yet somehow time
Does not exist--
I've been there.

Envisage a place
Walls are all windows
That never break,
Where your room doesn't lock
And your wrist says your name--
I've been there.

Envisage a place
Where your room is a prison
Without any bars
Where they strip off your clothes
To gawk at your scars--
I've been there.

Envisage a place
Where everyone
Is always stoned
Where they feed you pills
To replace your drug,
"Rehabilitated," they send you home--
I've been there.

Envisage a place
Where your head is always
Too heavy to lift
And they note you're not eating,
But your stomach's too sick--
I've been there.

Envisage a place
Where you hide in your head
Where you rock back and forth,
And you pull at your hair,
And you've lost your mind,
Curled up in your bed--
I've been there.

Envisage a place
Where that bed's always cold
Sheets hospital white
And they remind you,
You're alone--
I've been there.

Envisage a place
That haunts your dreams
Well I've been to that place--
So envisage you're me.
