Jatra

A modest home on the bank of a pond

Beyond the pond a medium sized field

The space becomes a flurry of activity

During the time when"Ramleela" is held

That was way back fifty years ago

When happiness was a plenty gadgets none

Just a colossal eleven band "Pye" radio

With a "magic eye" and lighted panel

The makeshift jatra stage of wooden planks

Creaking and squeaking as the actors move

Ogling spectators squatting on the dusty grass

Scattering peanut shells all around munching

Peanuts and small paper "chanachur"cones

The kings, queens, mighty warriors of the epic

Ramayana depicting brotherly love Ravana's lust

The dedicated follower Hanuman with a long tail

Helps his master Lord Rama slay proud Ravana

Funnily.. no ladies were there in the act

Men doubled as women in roles humorous

Till the wee hours of the morning

People stare with sleepy eyes

The epic enacted year after year

Alas the telly Ramayana,I shed a tear
