Modern Rock, A Review

I notice rock and roll

Lost its mind

Around 1999

With the band

Radiohead.

That's around the time

They simply

Stopped making sense.

And while this

Didn't effect

Any other genre

Of music,

When you listen

To rock and roll

It's like there's a person

Out there

Who you're just supposed

To assume

You know

To know what they're talking about.

It's in the assuming

That the insanity begins.

They're missing a noun.

They need to work on that

By next

Offseason.

I don't know

Who this person is

But I bet he would have

A few choice words

For them

If anyone could ever

Find him.

I hear that he's a creep.

I hear that he's

Power hungry.

I hear that he's

A real let down

And always

Cheating on his wife.

Someday

He will die

Or someone

Will call them on it

And it will be like

Reading Garfield

Without the cat

And you'll just be listening

To John

Hysterically talking to himself.

Either that

Or they will shelve

Rock and roll

And we'll all listen

To rap or R and B.

So for the sake

Of that guy

Whoever he is

And for the sake

Of listening taste,

Get a life, modern rock,

And talk about something

In the real world

For once.

You are completely out of your mind.

I don't appreciate it

And I doubt

Many other people do.

And I don't know

Who you're talking about

But a rapist deserves

Better treatment.

So start talking about

Yourselves

Or actual issues

Or clearly defined people

And stop gossiping

About some guy

I have never heard of.

Christ, there was a war

And you missed it.

He must work for the military

Because your head was so far

Up your ass

You missed an illegal war

Gossiping about someone's sex life.

You play both kinds

Of music

On the radio:

Sex songs AND love songs.

Rock used to write

For baby boomer college kids,

Not little kids.

That's why everything

Is so dumbed down now.

Hell even Jack White's hits

Won't stand the test of time.

So give me some Coltrane

Or Miles or Dave Brubeck,

I'm sick of this crap.

You're unhinged.

"Everybody knows about it/

From the queen of England

To the hounds of hell,"

Jack wrote.

What do they know about, Jack?

I will never know.

It's the assuming

That I don't get

That pisses me off.

I notice that

When I read a book

And then come back to radio.

You don't make sense.

I get a feeling of

Sea sickness

In my gut at first,

Then I get used to it.

Maybe there is a guy

And it isn't crazy

It's just lazy writing

Because you don't explain

Him

And don't bounce

Your thoughts about him

Off anything sane,

You just write it straight out

About him

And I have no idea

Who or what you're talking about.

Poor bastard.

He needs to move to Europe

And deal with sane people

Again.

I don't care

If he's a child rapist.

What kind of industry

Is so sock in the head

That they focus

On someone

Like that

All the time?

I'm starting to think

There's something

Going on around here

And I don't like

What I'm finding.

My main frustration

Is that

I just had to dump

Two hundred pages of poetry out

Becuase it didn't make sense

Because I was listening

To too much rock and roll

And I started

To write like them.

It's possible that

You have simply

Lost your mind,

But I think

The truth is

You're writing about someone

And you are

A lazy

Writer.

You write

In a confessional style

So I guess

You should thank

Ann Sexton

But no one

Is studying you

Someday.

I can't make heads or tails of you.

Unless I assume things

That I can't

Because I'm sane.

Upon further investigation

I did hear

Trent Rezner once say,

"This is not for the future.  This

Is for now."

And I did hear

The band Bush say,

"I can't go back.  I lost my

Mind over you."

But I don't know

Who he lost his mind over.

You need

To write

About things

And not serve up

News bulletins

That last ten minutes.

There's my review

Of your work,

Modern rock.

Take it

Or leave it.

It was a bit jaded.

My dog just died and nothing,

At least in rock,

Makes sense.

I like this

Just because I also think there is a lot of crap

Out there and a lot of it I have never listened to.

I wouldnt limit it to rock though.

There is a lot of meaningless stuff

That is produced for whatever reason.

absence of aesthetic and message not very unique or well arranged back music to words as notes- I stopped listening to post modern music in the 70's - Disco killed creativity and the youth ate it up. Perperually at war, greed as motive, the folk will counter these times and sounds and survive. The next wave of actual music is long over due. I am rediscovering Chopin and Rachmaninov ~ allets
