And Off We Go

The two of us in the grass, lying back,

"Face to face with the sky."

From this pinnacle to daylight's decline

Our hearts were as buoyant

As air, and calm.

Our voices, interwoven with each other,

As sonorous as song.

Our bodies couldn't have been

More contented.

And beneath the blue scene

Of the sky, kissed in the distance

By the color green,

My thoughts fixed on your words.

How they pitter pattered around

Your perfect nose.  Then the sound bounced

Without a trace of a nostril.

We were almost one, the two of us.

I can't explain.

No one could.  Except to say

That we seemingly embraced

On another plain.

Difficulty and work

Were as foreign as modernity

In those fields where I learned

How to kiss.

How to mean what I said

With my lips

However I used them.

That was a day I spent beneath

And in the service of the Lord

Our God, Who brought you, I swear.

Your beauty demanded I believe in Him.

Your beauty a basis for beauty.

And you were a fascist for me,

My singular lackadaisacal regime.

You would gladly ride, or die.

Even as I traded art for n'art

You gave yourself without exception

To an ordinary reception;

Save heaven's giddy faces in the clouds.

I was very aware.

"Face to face with the sky,"

You and life were angels of mine.

Thanks for the kind reviews.  It's fun to get feedback on your writing.  It's also nervewracking to share such personal stuff with so many people.  So thanks for being nice.
