14,000 General Motors Jobs Gone by 2019

Today, November 26, 2018, at 10a, General Motors announced that 3 plants outside north america will close. In North America - 2 in Canada, 1 in Ohio, 1 in Warren, Michigan and 1 in Detroit, Michigan will each have a plant closed. Merry Christmas from General Motors. Kenosha, Wisconsin was mentioned also. Local 222 will try to save the Canadian jobs. I live between Warren and Detroit. Oh, the recession syndrome about to attack this neighborhood. All of the proposed closings are in The Midwest. Those plants set the high standard of living here. Ooooookay.

You think those jobs will be around forever and you buy a house and new cars, then learn that you will not be working come 2019. How do you pay for the kids to go to college? Major universities are about to take a hit. Steel importers and their support industries and workers will be hit. Restaurants will close, the airlines will also take a hit. Clothing. Forget it. Grass seed is about to see a dip in sales as are plant nurseries. The housing industry is about to suffer a rash of units on the market. Financial industry - takes a hit if sellers will take anything for their property. Ouch!

Only part cause is the tariffs on steel, GM said. It added one billion dollars in cost to their company. The idea is to develop electric cars, the wave of the future. Also, 90% of autos sold in North America are trucks and SUV's. There is no demand for smaller vehicles or the standard sedan offering by GM.

  .

As GM goes, so goes the car industry in North America. Ford will follow suit or face the fate of American Motors. To not change with the industry's shifts would be devastating. Interestingly, the tax cuts did not offset rising costs. Greed is being shouted, calls to save jobs, but the factors against GM are too enormous.

  .

Trump promises to put tariffs on foreign cars imported to usa, but he has no understanding of the economics of car manufacturing and will not listen to anyone. this is how recessions start. I don't want to look at Wall Street's reaction to this news.

I am reminded of the statement I made about seven years ago that the Republicans get in power and run up the budget deficit and leave a mess for the Democrats to clean up. Everyone said no they don't, but seems they did this time. We'll get to run it up next time.

This is the trumpet sounding, the bell tolling, a shot across the proverbial prow. As GM shrinks, the world economy shrinks, and usa is in for some serious adjustments. Trend outlook: Down.

The Unionized Worker Dilemma

Automation for making automated cars or battery run vehicles (trucks and SUV's). It is the wage earners who keep economies booming - ultimately. No consumers, no sales. (High tech is booming still, however but can it do what buying cars does?) New automated plants and no need to pay employment taxes or benefits like health care or retirement investment accounts or make payroll. Such change-over in manufacturing is as revolutionary as the assembly line. Automation is why the us post office can not compete with Amazon and others, low overhead. GM will save half a billion on benifits alone post 2019, just before the election year, please note. (Blue Cross Blue Shield can not be happy). Just when you think it is going to get boring, voila! :D

Robotics In Industry

Is the wave of the future. The global economy is so interwoven that if one sector fails, they all go down. We are in for a major correction - a lot of damage has been done to international currencies and exchange rates. - slc

Major Economy Shift

McDoinald's will have to start paying $58.00 per hour with dental, BC/BS, and huge retirement benefits. Do you think they can afford it? You bet your red shirt they can! When I positied that major voices in usa should speak up for the  2020 elections, I did not expect Chealsea Sully Sullenberg or General Motors Corpoation. Whew! Talk about voices of america speaking up about Trump's regime. - slc

At least

they pay minimum wage. Still, anyone who tries to unionize them gets canned. UAW will be looking for emplyees to organize if GM does what it proposes. I hope some compromise is reached. Southeast Michigan will be devastated. - slc

We Lost American Motors

And Chrysler is now Daimler-Chrysler. GM is going to build competitive cars with a smaller work force. The tech will be cutting edge and the price of the product higher probably. The electric car. The world will change. Again. To what, we shall see.
