NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS VS NEW ORLEANS SAINTS LIVE STREAM: WEEK 2,2017

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS VS NEW ORLEANS SAINTS LIVE STREAM - The New England Patriots began the 2017 season with a shocking loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, who came into Foxborough and beat the defending champions soundly. The Saints will be looking to follow the same formula with Drew Brees and Alvin Kamara, another talented runner from this year’s rookie class, to get the victory. Watch NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS VS NEW ORLEANS SAINTS Live Stream free online on your PC, laptop, Mac, I-pad, Tab, Ps4/3, I-phone Android or any other online device.

New England Patriots (0-1) -

Not a lot of things went right for the Pats in their shock 42-27 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs. Tom Brady was uncharacteristically off as he went just 16-of-36 for 267 yards. His 44 percent completion percentage is actually dead-last in the NFL through one week. Brady also wasn’t helped by an offensive line which struggled to impose itself.

Meanwhile, the defense looked troublingly inept. Their front couldn’t generate any pressure whatsoever and was repeatedly gashed on the ground. The loss of linebacker Dont’a Hightower to a knee injury was a huge one, and it remains to be seen whether he will be risked this week.

But as bad as things looked on both sides of the ball for the Pats, it’s never a good idea to overreact to a bad Week 1 result, and an even worse idea to doubt Bill Belichick, especially with over a week to prepare. Even with key absentees, he should have his team ready to go for their visit to New Orleans.

After going up against the Chiefs’ very strong defense in Week 1, facing the Saints and their still-porous pass secondary which was torn to shreds by Sam Bradford and the Vikings offense should be a perfect matchup for Brady and the Pats offense to get back on track.

New Orleans Saints (0-1) -

Adrian Peterson’s return to Minnesota did not go exactly as planned. His new team, the Saints, had some uncharacteristic offensive struggles and more characteristic defensive problems in their 29-19 defeat against the Vikings on Monday Night Football.

Peterson rushed for just 18 yards, which was actually tied for the team lead as the Saints struggled to create anything on the ground. With their patched up O-line struggling to get a decent push, they finished with just 60 yards on 21 carries.

Drew Brees once again did his best to keep the team in it, but even he didn’t seem at his best. Perhaps he was missing last year’s top target, Brandin Cooks, who will make his return to New Orleans with the Pats.

It’s entirely possible that Brees and the offense play better now that they get to go back home and they go from facing the Vikings’ imposing line to the Pats’.

However, it’s much more unlikely that the Saints’ troublesome defense can improve any further. And if this game comes down to which team can pull off enough stops, the Saints will struggle to produce on that end.

Three Things to Watch -

1. Any semblance of a rushing attack for the Saints?

It is a new season, yet it is the same old struggle for the Saints’ offense. Three tailbacks each carried the ball six or seven times against the Vikings for 17 or 18 yards apiece. None scored a touchdown. The paltry total: 60 rushing yards on 21 attempts for the entire offense.

The Chiefs’ rushing attack gashed the Patriots for 185 rushing yards, the most the Patriots have allowed since Week Seven of 2014. But it wasn't just the yardage total — it was the Chiefs' average gain of 6.9 yards per attempt that really hurt the Patriots. Considering that the Patriots allowed 100 or more rushing yards in two consecutive weeks only one time last season, no one should expect such repeated generosity from the Patriots’ defenders.

2. Tom Brady’s response to a sub-par performance -

Brady struggled through the season opener with a 44 percent completion percentage. He had not endured a similar performance since a two-point loss at Miami in the 2005 regular-season finale of 2005, when he completed only 3-of-8 pass attempts for 37 yards along with a touchdown and an interception, although with the AFC East title secured, he did not play the entire game. The following week, in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, he completed 15-of-27 passes attempts for 201 yards and three touchdowns, as the Patriots crushed the Jaguars 28-3.

On three other occasions, Tom Terrific had a lower completion percentage than he did in the 2017 NFL season opener. In 2003, New England managed to defeat the Giants on the road 17-6 in spite of Brady’s eight completions in 21 passing attempts for only 112 yards and no touchdowns. He followed up that meager effort with a win at home versus Miami with 24 completions on 34 attempts for 283 yards and two touchdowns. Later that season, the Patriots shut out the Cowboys, 12-0, despite Brady’s minimal contribution: 15-of-34 passing for 212 yards and no touchdowns. The next week at Houston, he connected on 29-of-47 passing attempts for 368 yards and two touchdowns in a victory. The following season, during a win at Miami, he had only seven completions in 19 attempts with one interception, though he did toss two touchdowns. In the next game, he led New England to a win in Seattle, going 19-of-30 for 231 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

3. Extra preparation time vs. home-field advantage -

The Patriots have nine days in between their previous game and this one. From 2013-16, they are 9–4 with more than six days to prepare for a game.

In contrast, the Saints have only five days to prepare, although what appears to be a glaring disadvantage has not proven to be so over the past four seasons.  The Saints have won 10 of their 12 contests following short weeks since Sean Payton returned from his one-year suspension.

In the four previous seasons, the Patriots’ record away from Foxboro is 22–12.  In that span, they have won all eight games played inside domed stadiums.

After finishing undefeated in the Superdome in 2013, the Saints’ invincibility at home has crumbled. Their record over the past three seasons in home games is 11–13. They have not had a winning record at home in any of those seasons.

Final Analysis -

Despite the bitter season opener, not all is bleak for the Patriots. Brady has shown that he never lets underwhelming passing performance carry over to the next game. Plus, the Patriots have demonstrated an aptitude for winning games on the road, particularly when the venues negate any potential weather issues.

Despite indications to the contrary, the Saints have not solved the problems bedeviling them over the past three seasons. Their defense struggles to pressure the opponent's quarterback. An inexperienced and struggling secondary cannot cover receivers. The Saints fall behind, then abandon their ho-hum rushing attack. Though Drew Brees and his crew can often pile up passing yards and score some points, those typically do not suffice. Additionally, the Superdome’s reputation as a hostile venue has not translated recently into more wins than losses at home.

Prediction: Patriots 34, Saints 20

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL LIVE STREAMING: TEXANS VS BENGALS WEEK 2

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL LIVE STREAMING - The Houston Texans and the Cincinnati Bengals both opened the seasons with disappointing home losses. The Texans fell at home to Jacksonville, 29-7, while the Bengals were shut out at home against their division rival Baltimore Ravens, 20-0. Both teams need to bounce back after horrific home performances but have just a few days to turn it around. Last season, the Texans edged the Bengals at home, 12-10. Houston Texans -

It appears as if Hurricane Harvey wasn’t done piling on the misery unto the city of Houston, as the Texans were blown out at home in their season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, 29-7.

The Texans offense was lost in the storm of the Jacksonville’s revamped defense, with quarterbacks Tom Savage and rookie Deshaun Watson combining for just 164 yards on 19-of-36 passing. In fact, Savage and Watson had more lost fumbles (three) than touchdowns thrown (one) during the contest.

What’s more peculiar about Houston’s play in Week 1 is that its defense didn’t live up to its billing. Even with a healthy J.J. Watt back in the lineup, the team failed to generate neither a sack nor a turnover against the Jags.

Perhaps Week 2’s clash versus the Bengals can get the Texans back on track. They’ve won five of their last six games against Cincinnati (4-2 ATS), with three of those victories coming at Paul Brown Stadium.

Cincinnati Bengals -

Similar to the Texans, the Cincinnati Bengals didn’t have the best of starts to their 2017 season to say the least after being shutout by the Baltimore Ravens, 20-0.

The Bengals were blanked at home for the first time since 2001, with quarterback Andy Dalton having one of his worst games as a pro. Dalton went a mere 16-of-31 for 170 passing yards and tied a career-high for interceptions with four. He also lost a fumble to give him five brutal turnovers for the afternoon.

Cincy’s offensive woes starts with their lackluster offensive line, which might not have starting right guard Trey Hopkins (left knee injury) for Thursday’s game against the texans. The O-line was also responsible for five Jacksonville sacks and a paltry team rushing total of just 77 yards on 22 carries.

Although Cincinnati’s defense can possibly expose Houston’s inexperienced QB tandem, we’re still not high on the team emerging victorious on Thursday night, as the Bengals are just 5-5 in their last 10 home games (4-6 ATS). Even worse, they’re just 5-11 in primetime games since 2011 with Dalton as their starting quarterback.

Both of these teams are coming off rough season openers, as the Texans fell flat on their face at home despite a crowd showing up and an emotional pregame as the city still recovers from Hurricane Harvey. The Bengals couldn't score a single point and their quarterback threw the game away with every turn. Good luck picking this game based on both showings and the fact they have short rest to prepare. I'm going to side with the Bengals because Dalton can't possibly play any worse and the Texans are still trying to find a QB after flipflopping last week. I expect the Bengals to play better and find a win at home. The Texans can't improve much until Savage or Watson prove they're worthy of leading the offense.

Keys to Victory -

Both of these teams are desperate to avoid starting the season 0-2. For the Texans, the offensive line needs to block better for whoever their quarterback will be. In Week 1, the Jaguars racked on 10 sacks against the Texans quarterbacks. The constant pressure was a large reason the Texans turned the ball over so much.

Savage and Watson combined for three fumbles and an interception, all due to how much pressure the Jaguars were able to put on the quarterback. If the Texans continue to struggle to stop the pass rush, they need rely more on running back Lamar Miller to lessen the pressure on the quarterback.

The Bengals only recorded one sack in their Sunday contest, so getting pressure on Houston would be huge. Most importantly for the Bengals, though, is that they need Dalton to keep his composure. Dalton put on one of the worst quarterback performances in NFL history on Sunday, and he is a franchise quarterback, unlike Savage or Watson.

The Bengals also need to establish a run game in order to set the tone on Thursday night. Houston allowed rookie running back Leonard Fournette to rack up 100 yards and a touchdown in his debut, so the Bengals know they will be able to run. However, on Sunday the Bengals rushed 21 times for only 75 yards as they split carries between Giovanni Bernard, Jeremy Hill, and Joe Mixon.

In practice this week, the Bengals need to decide who is the most talented back and try to set them up early in the game. Having multiple running backs split equal time rarely works, especially when your team’s quarterback throws 4 interceptions and barely completes 50% of his passes.

Prediction -

Week 2 is really early to say any game is a “loser leaves town” match, but this game certainly has that feel. The Texans looked terrible against the Jaguars but ultimately Watson coming into the game did provide a spark for the offense. Watson deserves to get the start of Thursday and ultimately I believe the will.

Meanwhile, how can Dalton come back after posting a 0.6 Total QBR and be fine? I think we see a shell shocked Dalton and the Texans are able to pull off a close one, relying on their defense.

Prediction: Houston Texans: 14, Cincinnati Bengals: 12

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS VS MINNESOTA VIKINGS LIVE STREAM: WEEK 1,2017

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS VS MINNESOTA VIKINGS LIVE STREAM - Monday Night Football action and the NFC South will duke it out with the NFC North as the New Orleans Saints take on the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Saints have had three straight 7-9 seasons and will be looking to break that trend this year, while the Vikings went just 8-8 a year ago and will be looking to ride their defense back to the postseason after missing it last year. New Orleans Saints -

For as long as Drew Brees is under center, the New Orleans Saints’ offense is in good hands.

Last season, Brees was the only quarterback in the NFL to reach the 5,000-yard passing mark, which was also the fifth time that he’d done so in his illustrious career. The 38-year-old ageless wonder also finished the season with an even 70-percent completion percentage, meaning his passing game’s very efficient as it is prolific like in seasons past.

Although New Orleans lost its top receiver in Brandin Cooks to New England, rookie wideout Michael Thomas (92 receptions, 1,137 yards and nine TDs) proved in his debut season that he’s capable of taking over as the team’s top receiving option. The Saints’ backfield also got an overhaul of sorts by getting future Hall-of-Fame running back Adrian Peterson, who could still emerge as an elite rusher under a new team despite concerns with his durability and age, and as a fine complimentary piece in the backfield with Mark Ingram.

The Saints still have a suspect defense, although that unit saw a slight improvement in 2016 by no longer ranking in the bottom of nearly every defensive category in 2015. Facing a relatively-inept Minnesota offense in Week 1 is a good starting point to see how much or how little the D has carried over its improvements the last time out.

It’s also worth noting that the Saints have won four-straight meetings against the Vikings since 2010, albeit that they only went 2-2 against the spread during those contests.

Minnesota Vikings -

In essence, the Minnesota Vikings are the polar opposites of the Saints. They’re powered by a defense that ranked third in the league in yards allowed in 2016 and was one of just eight teams in the NFL to surrender less than 20 points on average per game. However, their inept offense couldn’t keep up with most teams shortly after key pieces on defense started getting injured, particularly cornerback Xavier Rhodes and defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd.

Strangely enough, quarterback Sam Bradford outdid Brees in passing efficiency, setting a new single-season record for completion percentage at 71.6 percent. However, Bradford finished with less than 4,000 passing yards given his reluctance to take shots downfield, which inevitably hurt his team’s overall offensive production.

Expect the Vikings offense to be just as timid as it was, especially with its offensive line barely getting upgrades to fix the running game. Minnesota had the worst rushing offense in the league last season, which means first-round rookie running back Dalvin Cook will need to find running lanes on his own on more occasions than none.

On a positive note, the Vikes went a decent 5-3 at home last season and an even better 6-2 record against the spread in those contests. On the other hand, failing to make any significant moves during the offseason to improve either side of the ball may come back to haunt them early on.

SERIES HISTORY: 29th regular-season meeting. Vikings lead series, 18-10. Vikings are 11-3 at home, but will be playing the Saints at U.S. Bank Stadium for the first time. The Saints have won the past three regular-season meetings and the past four overall. The last time these teams met in Minnesota, the Saints won 42-20 at the Metrodome late in the 2011 season. Drew Brees completed 32 of 40 passes for 412 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions and a 149.2 pass rating before taking a seat early in the fourth quarter. The teams have met in the playoffs three times. The Vikings won the first two, but lost in the NFC title game in overtime at New Orleans in January 2010. The game also served as one of the primary examples that uncovered the Saints' infamous "Bountygate" scandal.

KEYS TO THE GAME: The Saints will try to find balance on an offense missing their starting left tackle and one of its top receivers while breaking in a new running back-by-committee approach. The biggest challenge will be to utilize Mark Ingram, Adrian Peterson and Alvin Kamara and establish a consistent run game against the Vikings' strong interior defense. When Drew Brees throws, he won't have his No. 2 returning receiver, Willie Snead, available because of suspension.

The Vikings have the superior defense, but they can't stay on the field all day with Drew Brees and all those Saints weapons. The revamped offensive line will have to start paying off immediately in first downs. It must open some holes for Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray. That will put the play-action passes in play, which will allow Sam Bradford to showcase his accuracy down the field.

Defensively, the Vikings will need to absorb the fury that Peterson is sure to bring early on.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH:

--Saints RB Adrian Peterson vs. Vikings MLB Eric Kendricks. Kendricks has led the Vikings in tackles in each of his first two seasons. Peterson is a former All-Pro and league MVP who spent his first 10 seasons in Minnesota. Yes, Peterson is now a complementary player on Drew Brees' team. He's not even the starter or primary back at this point. But the Saints no doubt will try to take advantage of Peterson's power and sheer rage over playing his former team on their field on 'Monday Night Football.'

--Vikings OTs Riley Reiff and Mike Remmers vs. Saints DEs Alex Okafor and Cam Jordan. The Vikings signed Reiff and Remmers from the Lions and the Panthers to upgrade the running game and better protect Sam Bradford. The Saints signed Okafor to complement Jordan and upgrade the Saints' pass rush.

SAINTS NOTABLE ROOKIE: Cornerback Marshon Lattimore. The first of the Saints' two first-round draft choices, Lattimore will get a chance to have an impact right away in the absence of starter Delvin Breaux. Though unclear whether Lattimore will start, he will definitely get significant playing time as Breaux recovers from recent surgery on a broken fibula.

VIKINGS NOTABLE ROOKIE: Running back Dalvin Cook. Cook didn't have a wow preseason, but he was there every day, all summer, grinding and learning the offense while veteran Latavius Murray spent most of the offseason recovering from ankle surgery. Cook, a second-round draft pick, has the speed, quickness and versatility to be a factor in the run game and pass game.

FAST FACTS: New Orleans RB Adrian Peterson can reach 1,000 rushing yards in Week 1 games with 115 on Monday night. He would become the fifth player in NFL history to reach that milestone. ... The Saints have become slow starters in recent years, dropping seven consecutive September matchups. ... Minnesota used 12 starters on the offensive line last year, which helps explain how it went from 5-0 to 8-8 and out of the playoffs. For Monday night's game, it is expected to trot out three new starters and play a fourth player at a different position than the one at which he started in 2016.

PREDICTION: The Vikings have been fast starters under coach Mike Zimmer, a marked contrast from the opponent they face Monday night. Peterson will be primed to burn his former team, but trends suggest a Minnesota victory.

OUR PICK: Vikings, 24-20.

LA CHARGERS VS DENVER BRONCOS LIVE STREAM: WEEK 1,2017

LA CHARGERS VS DENVER BRONCOS LIVE STREAM - Monday evening on the NFL gridiron and a pair of AFC West foes will duke it out as the Los Angeles Chargers travel to Sports Authority Field in Denver, Colorado to rumble with the Denver Broncos. The Chargers have a new home and a new head coach and will be looking to make it to the postseason for the first time since 2013, while the Broncos also have a new head man and will be looking to make it back to the postseason after missing out last year, which was the first time they missed out since 2011. Los Angeles Chargers -

Barring another injury-riddled campaign, the Los Angeles Chargers could very well be this season’s dark horse playoff team.

Had standout receiver Keenan Allen and pass-catching running back Danny Woodhead not suffered early-season injuries last year, quarterback Philip Rivers might’ve not had as much trouble passing the ball at an efficient rate. Instead, and because of those injuries to Allen and Woodhead, Rivers threw 21 interceptions – his most since 2011 – despite racking up over 4,000 passing yards for the fourth-straight season.

Even with Woodhead now a part of the Patriots, Rivers and the Chargers have a healthy Allen returning and can now lean on a true workhorse back in Melvin Gordon, who was three yards shy of a 1,000-yard rushing season to go with his 12 offensive touchdowns in just his second year in the NFL. Gordon averaged less than four yards per carry as well, but look for that statistic to improve with health also returning to Los Angeles’ offensive line.

Meanwhile, the Bolts’ defense appears pretty solid on paper entering the regular season. Joey Bosa (10.5 sacks in just 12 games) was a monster as a rookie, as he and Melvin Ingram look to become the best linebacking tandem in the NFL this season. Cornerback Casey Heyward is another star on the rise, and these three players will only continue to grow in hopes of improving the team’s middle-of-the-road D.

Unfortunately, the Chargers open their 2017 season in Mile High, where they’ve lost four straight and five of their last six meetings against the Broncos. On the other hand, they’ve gone 4-2 against the spread in those contests in the Rockies, which goes to show that they’re at least capable of delivering good results for the bettors backing them up.

Denver Broncos -

The Denver Broncos struggled to win games in their first full season without Peyton Manning at the helm, finishing the 2016 season with a winning 9-7 record but also failing to make the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

It seems as if the Broncos are still feeling the financial aftermath coming from their Super Bowl 50 victory, as they’ve done little in the offseason to improve one key aspect of their offense: offensive line. They lost tackle Russell Okung to the Chargers this offseason, which means expectations are high for former Cowboy Ronald Leary to make up for the loss. Leary was a member of Dallas’ vaunted O-line from last season, but he’s also arguably the most inconsistent lineman of the bunch.

Regardless of who’s starting at quarterback this season, the Broncos still have a couple of wideouts in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders capable of making life easier for either Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch in the passing game. However, lead running back C.J. Anderson, who has yet to play a full 16-game season, needs to stay on the field to give the team’s offense some stability.

Then there’s Denver’s highly-praised defense, which could realistically score more points than the team’s offense this 2017. Star linebacker Von Miller lost his edge-rushing partner in DeMarcus Ware (retirement), but Shane Ray – with his eight sacks from last season – is a viable replacement for Ware. The secondary remains as imposing as ever, with the elite cornerback tandem of Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr. ready to shut down opposing receivers yet again.

The Broncos’ Opening Week clash against the Chargers is virtually a toss-up, especially with the hosts going a mere 5-3 at home last season (SU/ATS). But if the boys from Mile High can pressure Rivers into making poor decisions like they’re wont to do, getting win No. 1 on the board should be at hand.

KEYS TO THE GAME: In a game that features two new coaches, Vance Joseph for the Broncos and Anthony Lynn for the Chargers, an old storyline could help determine the winner: Which team wins at the line of scrimmage? The Broncos feature four new starters on the offensive line, including rookie left tackle Garrett Bolles and right tackle Menelik Watson, and the unit could have its hands full against Chargers dynamic pass rushers Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. Bolles earned rave reviews during the preseason, but he will have to prove he can stay composed and avoid penalties under the bright lights of Monday night.

When the Chargers have the ball, all eyes will be on running back Melvin Gordon. Last season, Gordon tallied 205 rushing yards in two games against the Broncos, and he will need to maintain that triple-digit average for the Chargers to have a chance. Denver features one of the most dominant defenses in the NFL (see Von Miller), and if they are able to establish an early lead, they could control the rest of the game.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: --Chargers WR Keenan Allen vs. Broncos CB Aqib Talib. Allen tore his ACL during the season opener one year ago, and Monday night will mark his return. The California alum notched 1,046 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie in 2013, but he has not broached that milestone since. Does he still have the same explosion he had before the ACL injury? Can he post 1,000 yards again? Monday should offer a hint.

--Broncos RBs C.J. Anderson and Jamaal Charles vs. Chargers LBs Korey Toomer and Nick Dzubnar. Anderson and Charles, once rivals, now team up to form a dynamic 1-2 punch, if both players can stay healthy. But the Chargers will not concede an effective running game to the Broncos, particularly with new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley scheming the defense.

CHARGERS NOTABLE ROOKIE: Defensive back Desmond King. Only a fifth-round pick from Iowa, most thought he would need a good camp just to make the team. He did that and more, being around the ball for most of the preseason games. A safety and cornerback, King finished preseason with two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble, all the while showing his versatility. He'll likely start the season as the team's nickel back.

BRONCOS NOTABLE ROOKIE: Left tackle Garett Bolles. The first-round pick worked his way into the starting lineup by the end of training camp and will be a work in progress as he settles in on a revamped offensive line that will include at least three new starters. The Broncos are counting on his tenacity and energy being positives while Bolles learns how to avoid penalties -- something that was a problem in their second preseason game when he was whistled for holding three times in the first half.

FAST FACTS: Chargers TE Antonio Gates, who is tied with Tony Gonzalez with 111 touchdown receptions, needs one more catch in the end zone to break the all-time record for most touchdowns by a tight end

Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy will game plan against the team he used to coach, the Chargers, who replaced him with first-year coach Anthony Lynn.

San Diego QB Philip Rivers needs 401 passing yards to move ahead of Vinny Testaverde for 11th place on the NFL all-time list.

Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas has topped 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past five seasons.

PREDICTION: In a tight game, the Broncos' defense proves to be the difference. Look for Von Miller & Co. to be disruptive, as usual, and the Broncos to hold on for a narrow win against a division opponent.

OUR PICK: Broncos, 20-16.

Patrick Mahomes might have exceeded Kansas City’s expectations this past preseason but the Chiefs are still Alex Smith’s team heading into the new NFL campaign. General manager Brett Veach alluded to that fact as the Chiefs ramped up their preparations for their Week 1 clash with New England. Yes, Mahomes went 34 of 54 (63 percent) for 390 yards (7.2 YPA), four touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 109.3 passer rating this past preseason but he still has a long way to go from supplanting Smith as the starting QB. According to Veach, “Smith is so far ahead of what Pat (Mahomes) is. I don’t think it’s even close right now.”

Smith will definitely need that vote of confidence for the season-opener against the Patriots. The Chiefs have lost each of their last six road games against the reigning Super Bowl champions, including a gut-wrenching 27-20 decision in the 2016 AFC Divisional Round playoff. Smith was solid in that clash, completing 29 of 50 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. His performance, however, wasn’t enough to overshadow the brilliance of Tom Brady who threw for 302 yards and a pair of touchdowns with no picks.

The Chiefs will need to do a much better job with their pass rush if they are to upset the Pats this coming Thursday. They didn’t sack Brady at all in that playoff loss last year. Kansas City struggled to cope without linebacker Justin Houston who came out after just eight snaps with a knee injury. The good news for the Chiefs is that Houston’s fully fit right now and the defensive star’s confident that they’ll get to Brady this time around. The pressure is on Houston to replicate his dominant 2014 season, when he piled up 22 sacks for Kansas City.

New England Patriots -

New England’s preparations for its title defense took a huge hit this past preseason with wide receiver Julian Edelman and No. 2 returner Cyrus Jones suffering season-ending knee injuries. Edelman has been a vital cog in the Patriots’ recent success, recording at least 92 receptions in three of the last four seasons. Just last year, he set a career high with 1,106 receiving yards. Jones, on the other hand, made seven tackles on defense and special teams while averaging 4.2 yards on 11 punt returns and 22.5 yards on eight kick returns last season.

If there’s one team, however, that can cope with these kind of losses, it’s got to be New England. The Patriots didn’t rest on their laurels following their Super Bowl triumph last February, stacking their championship lineup with even more weapons this past offseason. They broke the bank for the top free-agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore and stole Brandin Cooks from New Orleans for a late first-round pick. The Pats may have said goodbye to running back LeGarrette Blount in free agency but in return they signed former backups Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead. They also re-signed linebacker Dont’a Hightower who was the centerpiece of the New England defense in 2016.

What sets this team apart though, is the long-standing excellence of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. They have already won five Super Bowl titles together and are prime favorites at +280 to bring home another Vince Lombardi trophy this coming season. The Pats are 183-52 when Brady’s under center, and that includes a staggering 14 seasons in which the now 40-year-old quarterback led the team to double-digit victories. Can he do it again this season? The Week 1 game against Kansas City can’t come soon enough.

Alabama is everyone’s No. 1, Florida State is actually the second best team – even if the AP and Coaches polls don’t see it that way – with a good argument to be made as the top team in terms of talent. And now. these two get to beat each other up in one of the most impressive opening weekend matchups ever.

NCAA STREAM: Alabama vs Florida State Live

Alabama is everyone’s No. 1, Florida State is actually the second best team – even if the AP and Coaches polls don’t see it that way – with a good argument to be made as the top team in terms of talent. And now. these two get to beat each other up in one of the most impressive opening weekend matchups ever.

Alabama vs Florida State

Date: Saturday, Sept. 2

Time: 8 p.m. ET

Location: Mercedes-Benz Stadium -- Atlanta

TV: ABC

Outside of Ohio State, these are perhaps the two most impressive football programs of this decade. Alabama and Florida State have combined to go 17-0 in season openers in the Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher eras, and most of those opponents were legitimate Power 5 teams.

Besides the intriguing coaching matchup, there’s a quarterback battle to watch. Alabama’s Jalen Hurts had a forgettable final month of the 2016 season and struggled again during the College Football Playoff. His rushing ability is elite, but his arm has a long way to go to catch up. Meanwhile, Florida State’s Deondre Francois is perhaps a little overrated at this point; the redshirt sophomore made plenty of big plays last year, but he never blew me away with his accuracy. For instance, in a thrilling Orange Bowl win against Michigan, many of his big plays were the result of scheme or well-run routes as opposed to him throwing a perfect ball. Sound like Hurts? They both have an opportunity to kick-start a Heisman campaign in Atlanta if one of them can provide some consistency (and a big stat line).

That’s a tall task for either one, because these defenses are strong. Alabama is elite again. All those guys who weren’t full-time starters in 2016 — Da’Shawn Hand, Joshua Frazier, Christian Miller, Rashaan Evans and Anfernee Jennings come to mind — have seen plenty of playing time and are ready to add their names to All-SEC and All-America lists. It’s the same old Saban story: The Crimson Tide have reloaded, and this version might be better than the last.

Florida State lost superstar running back Dalvin Cook, its top four receivers and best defensive player … but remains a national title threat. The Seminoles have a solid defensive backfield (featuring safety Derwin James, who might be the top player in the country), though depth is somewhat of a worry at cornerback.

It’s the game that will set the table for the NCAA’s power structure in 2017, and I expect Alabama to overwhelm FSU and stake its claim (once again) as the best team in America.

The pick: Alabama.
