Norbu & Keeloh

The boy canvassed the edge of the lake for the perfect stones, flat round and smooth. He liked to stack them into pillars. Every morning he would come out and most of the previous day's carefully balanced stones would be strewn in disarray and he would spend a good deal of his free time re-stacking them. He would stack them as high as his 10 year-old reach would allow. But not this day. This day they were all still perfectly standing at attention. He walked to the water, let it lap against his somba. Keeloh stood at a distance, he did not like water at all and whined for his friend to come back to safety. Norbu looked up and watched the sky fill with crystalline rainbow light. The water at the center of the lake began to churn and there appeared from the froth a shining silver treasure vase. Keeloh barked, "Do not go in there, do not go in there... Utpala Hell he's going in there." Norbu turned and nodded at the dog, "Yes I am!" He boldly took a step out onto the glassy surface and it held him. He looked again at Keeloh, making a face of wild bemusement. The huge mastiff shook its woolly head. Norbu tentatively tiptoed his way out into the middle of the lake, grabbed the vase and raised it up over his head triumphantly. His mother looked up from her work on the rooftop of their khangpa just in time to see her son sink into the azure waters of Lhamo La-tso clutching a kumbha to his heart. Keeloh let out a yelp, resigned himself to a bath and went in after Norbu.
