I staged my own civil rights movement when I was in the 5th grade. My mother asked me who I wanted at my birthday party. My list included a black girl named Grace. My parents wouldn't have it and I still don't know why other than it was a sign of the times. I did not know them to be bigoted or racist but it could have been because there just weren't any black people in our neighborhood. Grace (who would later go on to be shot by her college boyfriend) was 1 of only 3 black kids in my elementary school circa early 70's.
My parents eventually relented (or was it a change of heart) and I ended up winning that battle (or was it a coup) because I was on the side of RIGHT...
