Listening for Love

Tequila-colored sunsets,

all vibrant colors quickly appear then diminish.

Roses and lilies fall upon a mud puddle on the street side.

Frogs discordantly communicate croaks in the sewer drains.

The stars stretch across the dusk, above this ragged horizon,

they illuminate these streets despite the lack of moon.

The clouds extend their arms around the white cookie in the sky.

They hug it tightly in slow motion, keeping it warm.

And in the alley, crickets creak a love song to the empty spaces.

Strangers exchange a midnight glance, a midnight grin,

while their footsteps frantically walk opposite directions

on this pavement.

These are the only sounds audible,

from the creaks, the croaks, stars spinning,

to mouths grinning.

And of course

the sweet and tranquil sound of your voice calling my name

loud and clear in my head.
