You Were So Good

"It's cold, it's so cold in here",

I told my teddy bear...he didn't answer.

I remember warmth,

in a time before you touched me in that way.

Touching me and touching me until I was truly touched.

Didn't you say that you were going to help me?

No wait, you said help yourself...to me?

Not unlike a piece of meat left out on the table overnight...

you consumed me.

But I WILL NOT be a part of you!

I refuse.

When I was six and I refused, you didn't listen.

You're bold, you're bold when near,

like a cancer.

"You were so good", you said...I didn't answer.

I think that this one is self explanatory.

I like this poem because you address a difficult issue the world has been facing since the beginning of time, but is just now learning to talk about. You mix action, dialogue, feelings, thoughts, and strength when inside it's tearing you apart. I don't know if this actually happened to you or if you writing as though it did from inspiration from a tv show, movie, article you read, or whatever, but whatever the case is you did a wonderful job as always. I wish you the best and God bless you, dear.

To read this poem brought tears to my eyes. Just the images revoked. So much pain went into each and every word written and to not feel that is to not be human. I am most sorry for the pain that you or this small girl endured. I can only say so many prayers that this not happen but still it continues. Good luck with the future poems. Marilyn

Thank you for sharing this very honest and disturbing account of child abuse, Geneva. I salute your courage in portraying this subject as it is; people need to be aware that abuse is real and leave scars. Incidently I have a poem on this subject at my page called 'The Boardgame'. I would appreciate if u read it and give me your comments. Thanks. Wish you well, Joan

A poem that isn't afraid to speak. I've been waiting my whole life for such beautiful work. It is rare and raw and so true to life, the soul, humanity. Speak. Speak. Speak. There are people listening, and someday they, too, will speak. You are amazing.

Geneva, Very disturbing yet well written piece. It saddens and maddens me when I think of all the people on this site, and all over the world, who can relate to this. Lots of love and strength to you! Thank you for your bravery in posting this.

Geneva: The truly tragic part is that the evil clings to the victim, inflicting pain years after the monster has betrayed trust and exploited innocent, nascent love. I can only imagine it takes a superhuman effort to place trust anew in others after the basis for trust within yourself has been so callously chipped away. I see you still struggling, not wanting to put it behind you because it has shaped you, but reaching out in spite of this wound and helping others deal with trauma to the soul. I enjoyed, some say still enjoying, a happy childhood, and hope never to experience abuse like this either first or second hand, and here I am trying to counsel a professional counsellor. I hope there's no statute against practising spiritual therapy without a license in Peoria Illinois! I know you find solace in your lyricism, and your teddy bear too.

Geneva, Another tragic and evil experience. I am so sorry for your pain. It sound like you are on a path to recovery, and not in any way in denial, or a self-blame state. Although, I am sure that you went through all of those things. Bless you for using your experience to openly help others who are in the earlier stages of suffering. I would say that this poem is great, but I can only say that it is powerful enough to be sad that such a tragic inspiration was behind it.
