Afraid

I am not afraid.

Every believer is tormented

By a thousand daemons,

Not the least of which is

Destiny

And the debt it holds

Over our heads.

Shaking, jerkin' and twitchin'

Eager in anticipation

For the vending machine orgasm

Of finality,

The cessation we buy every day.

I head directly for

Your new world;

I walk with a broom behind me

The better to sweep away

My tracks.

A man was waiting for a bus

And I didn't have the heart

To tell him

It wasn't coming.

He said "In my dreams

The whole world  is fucking

To the song in my mind."

I smiled and kissed him,

Slow, sensuous, and deep.

He pulled away, shocked and grinning...

Then I punched him

In the face and walked away.

I am not afraid.

I have never been afraid.

for a price,

I let people sleep

And permit them to dream of me.

I let them use my soul

Until I want it back.

Drugs give you pleasure,

Booze gives you colour,

And death gives you a break

At just the right time.

So kick the crutch

And watch him fall;

Cruelty is subjective, after all.

Do we doubt the necessity

Of Armageddon?  Gotterdammerung?

The spider-nest in the beehive?

There is much to be expected

And much to be learned

But I am not afraid.
