Behind the Scenes: The Golden Girls

Fans of The Golden Girls, there's quite a few

I've got a bit of news for you

Before the show aired, there was another part

A character whose name was Art

Art was a widower who lived next door

Who attracted the attention of the Girls, all four

There was so much fighting among the cast

They forgot about Art, he didn't last

Initially, Dorothy wanted this to occur

She wanted the part, she'd be Art, her

But Estelle had a good friend Ty

Who also wanted it, Estelle:'Get Ty!'

At that point a big argument arose

It was between Estelle and Rose

It all had to do with the character's race

And what should be the color of Art's face

Immediately after Estelle said 'Get Ty'

Rose said 'Bet Ty white!' and started to cry

Estelle became very pale, later she'd say

'I admit I blanched, still rue the way I felt that day'

Rose desired a man of color, didn't get her way

NBC didn't know what was PC, afraid, so fear ruled the day

At a meeting of network execs they all said

'Art should depart, focus on the four Girls instead'
