Keep those records clean

Headline in today's NY Times:

'Should Some Criminal Records Be Wiped Clean After 7 Years?'

Good question! I have quite a few old records myself sitting in a box in the closet collecting dust and wasn't sure of the answer. I did some investigating online and found out the following:

Just like any other forms of physical media, vinyl records need to be kept clean so they work properly. Fingerprints, dust, and scratches can damage the surface of the record itself, which can diminish the sound and add unwanted noise. For most people, a single thorough cleaning of all their records followed by cleaning every 10 to 20 plays is a good start.

If my math is correct, if you only play your records 10-20 times in 7 years then...you're not playing them often enough! What's the point of having records if you're not going to play them? That's why you bought them, right?

To keep these beautiful vinyl records in a closet collecting dust? I agree 100% with the Times on this one. It's criminal!
