A Suitor's Claim

What may I promise thee

That thou wouldst believe?

With flowery exaggeration

I could swear thee a nation,

Offer thee the sun, the moon, the stars,

Say I wouldst duel and defeat Mars!

But promising thus is without meaning,

So much as to make love misleading.

Often are simplest words most true,

Let me speak as my simple mind will do.

My heart for thee is as full of passion,

Though my lips this express in plainer fashion,

Lady, with honest truth do I swear,

With all that I am, for thee I do care.
