Author's Notes/Comments:

Despite severe illness which, ultimately, proved fatal, the Poet, Shiki, modernized Haiku and Tanka (and, I presume, Senryu and Kyoka---if not directly than by association with the other two forms).

Although rhyme is not integral to Tanka/Kyoka or Haiku/Senryu, the repeated sound in the fourth and fifth lines (although in different syllabic positions) seemed to me like a desirable chime, as rung by a spring wind beneath spring's lavender sky.
