Yet [*/+/^] : 27.225 MHz, Some Final Measures; Poem After Pasternak

On this winter night, while the lovers

explored the peaks of pleasure with each other,

one scented candle burned long into the night

until it had burned itself away, and its light

expired in a single sputter,

like a drunk rolled to death in a gutter,

like dying stars extinguished in outer space.

Even the lovers, themselves, may soon be extinguished---

are they subversives, layabouts, secretly Orthodox Christians,

partisans of the murdered Romanovs, or even a

couple of long-haired, slender, noticeably petit bourgeois boys?

Still the candle's fragrance continues to ascend

toward the ceiling, and into the crevices, really throughout the place;

it need not struggle, again, nor even contend

with the compulsion and demand of gravity,

but approaches the condition and meaning of incense,

with neither presumption nor pretense,

but soars upward like a soul eager to avoid

besetments on the way to Christ's Heaven, where the Lord is enjoyed.

An intoxicatingly beautiful

An intoxicatingly beautiful scene that you set with cunning strategy by making one scented (important!) candle the center of focus. We watch the hypnotic flame sputter once and vanish, leaving the encounter in a state of mystery, seductive subversion and defiance—a brilliant allusion to the brave literary genius.

The ascending fragrance left from the vanished flame represents quiet resistance, triumph and freedom: a clever reference to the Church's use of incense and its victory over persecution. Finally the physical is elevated to the Divine, and there is a glorious upward movement filled with bliss.

A captivating and liberating experience.

Thank you.  Although I woke

Thank you.  Although I woke today feeling as ill as a stockbroker on the day after the crash of '29, your comment brought revitalizing sparkle into a very dismal and decrepit morning.
