Footnote: Dawn On January 10th, 1978

Breaking up was like a supernova's last

flare; the final sparks sputtering in the vast

darkness and chill---the silent emptiness---of

deep and distant outer space, where drift the hulks

of extinguished stars.

No one gave warning, even a slight hint that

the sun would become a weak and paltry smear

of pallid light veiled by steelgray clouds, clotting

around untold loads of hail and sleet to be

released upon us.

Starward

Author's Notes/Comments:

This poem could not have been written without the splendid example of Signet's poem, "Dawn," which is one of the finest short poems I have ever read---on postpoems or anywhere else, since I began to read poetry in Spring, 1973.
