At The Death Of The Apostle Saint John

He hardly had enough breath left to smother

a single candle.  But, until the last,

he whispered to us all, "Love one another."

And now the great Apostle's soul has passed

from this life to life present with the Lord.

In prison scourged, and to hard labor cast

on penal Patmos, but not in exile

from Christ.  This witness to the truth survived,

to live to see how well our faith has thrived.

Brother to James, and son to Zebedeee,

he first met Christ beside Lake Galilee.

The youngest of the Twelce, some said, a boy,

he learned from Jesus Christ, Whom he adored,

the very Holy Gospel's call that we

heard from him---Love, exuberant with joy,

transforms even the worst of rage and guile,

raising us up to spiritual lifestyle.
