+ 9TH POEMS: A Young Man Barefoot On The Sand, On The Shore Of Ἐπαρχία Κύπρου

We were thrilled to hear about Jesus from Evangelist Mark's

manuscript, that he had begun on our island.

The accounts he read were like gentle, vivified sparks

that set aflame our previously needy and empty hearts.

And so, to keep us from becoming mere fractioned parts

(which would have pleased that roaring lion, our enemy),

he admitted us to the fellowship of the Mystery

when he gave us the grandeur of the Liturgy

that he wrote for us.  On the week's first day, my land---

that the Romans disdain as just an insularity---

experiences, through our worship, a starward sanctity.
